Aso was formed in 2005 by merging Aso Town, Ichinomiya Town and Namino Village. Known for the magnificent scenery of Mount Aso and the Aso Caldera, the city also includes the shrine town around Aso Shrine. The city office is in Ichinomiyamachi Miyaji.
