A town in the Higashi-Kishu region, Mihama was formed in 1958 by the merger of 3 towns and villages, including Atawa. Along the Kumano Sea stretches Shichiri Mihama, a beach of rounded pebbles, which lies within Yoshino-Kumano National Park. The town office is in Atawa.
