About Shirakawa City
Shirakawa became a city in 1949 when Shirakawa Town merged with Onuma Village, and in 2005 it merged with the villages of Omotego, Taishin and Higashi to form the new Shirakawa City. In ancient times it was the gateway to the Michinoku (northern) region, where the Shirakawa Barrier stood, and today it has the ruins of Komine Castle and Nanko Park. The city office is about a 10-minute walk from JR Shirakawa Station.
