About Hiroshima City
The prefectural capital, Hiroshima City gained city status in 1889 and became a government-designated city in 1980, and with its eight wards it is the central city of the Chugoku region. It is home to the Atomic Bomb Dome, a World Heritage Site, and the Peace Memorial Park, and grew up as the castle town of Hiroshima Castle. The city office is in Kokutaiji-machi, Naka Ward, and can be reached from the Shiyakusho-mae stop on the Hiroden streetcar.
